Scuola Grande di San Rocco was
founded by a fraternity of wealthy citizens in 1478. In 1564, Tintoretto
was asked to decorate the School. All the works are his or his students’.
Particularly valuable is the Hotel’s Hall.
Church of San Rocco, just like
at the Scuola Grande, Jacopo Tintoretto worked on this church, painting
the shutters of the organ with scenes of the Annunciation and Saint
Rocco presented to the Pope.
Basilica dei Frari, built between
1236 and 1338 by the Franciscan friars minor, this basilica is one
of Venice’s most important churches . It contains some of
the most important works of the Renaissance, including Bellini’s
Triptych of the Madonna and the Saints, a masterpiece of 15th-century
Venetian painting, the evocative Pala dell'Assunta, one of Titian’s
mature masterpieces, specifically painted by the artist for the
major altar, the famous Madonna di Ca' Pesaro, other famous altar
piece by Titian, and the wooden statue of Saint John the Baptist,
a work by Donatello.
Going past Campo San Polo, Venice’s
largest square second only to Saint Mark’s, one reaches Rialto,
the business center of the City, featuring its open-air markets
of fish, fruit, and vegetables.
