The Veneto region of Wines

Do you know that Veneto is one of the most visited regions of Italy, thanks to its immense historical, artistic, and architectural heritage and natural landscape? In Veneto there is something for everyone: beautiful art cities to get lost in a journey through time, long stretches of beaches perfect for weekend getaways, mountain resorts for winter sports and hiking paths and hilly villages loved by visitors of all ages.

The Prosecco Wine, the best-selling label in the world

Just in the hills of Veneto, where the humid Po Valley climate becomes dry due to the slight difference in altitude, and the air is cooler, we find the perfect conditions for miles and miles of thriving vineyards and wine crops. The local vineyards produce countless variations of red and white, but the best known is undoubtedly the Prosecco Wine, the best-selling label in the world that – in 2014 – has outperformed even famous Champagne.
We can date the Prosecco back to the early sixteenth century when the city of Trieste was trying to highlight the Ribolla Wine, the leading wine production of the city, distinguishing it from its cheap version that came from the nearby area of Gorizia and Istria. Originally it was called Pucino, because it came from the latin “castellum nobile vino Pucinum”, aka the Prosecco Castle, found in the Trieste county. Today the area where the finest Prosecco is grown is no longer in Friuli Venezia Giulia, but in Veneto: Valdobbiadene, Conegliano with, the area of Montello and the Asolo hills, in the province of Treviso. Here the best cultivations and vineyards are characterized by the DOCG “Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita” label – Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin Label.

Among the rolling hills of Veneto

But among the rolling hills of Veneto many other villages built around their medieval castles are known for their ancient grapes. Amongst them, the Soave (VR), 6,600 hectares located in the eastern part of the province of Verona, was the first area in Italy to be recognized as D.O.C. back in 1936, already known to the ancient Romans for the richness of its lands.
Its wines, such as the Recioto di Soave, are always front row and center at Vinitaly, the largest world wine fair.

Even Marostica, located in the province of Vicenza, is another must-visit town thanks to its unique double-castle. The first fortification of the Hungarians dates back to the tenth century, but the castle has had many rulers: the powerful family of Ezzelini between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, the City of Vicenza, and from the fourteenth century the Scaligeri Lords of Verona, who gave the castle the current “shape” by combining the Upper and Lower Castle.
A must-see event in Marostica is the re-enactment of the human chess game that takes place every two years in the main square.
