The Biennale of Venice

Venice Biennale - Art, Architecture, Cinema, Dance, Music, Theater

The Venice Biennale is one of the most important cultural institutions in Italy and the world. The origins of the Venice Biennale can be attributed to the famous mayor of Venice Riccardo Selvatico, who in 1893 decided to establish an art exhibition-event.

On April 30, 1895 the first International Art Exhibition of the city of Venice was held, every two years and in odd years. The Biennale of art immediately arises as a model for organizing contemporary art events for all disciplines.

It is in 1932 that the first Film Festival, or rather the Venice International Film Festival, is held on the terrace of the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido of Venice, the event is one of the most important  Film Festival in the world.

In 1936 the International Theater Festival of Prose begins, initially every 2 years but after 1936 on an annual basis.
In 1980  opened the first Architecture Biennale, followed the Music and Dance Biennale in 1999.

The events of the Venice Biennale take place throughout the city but mainly at the pavilions of the Giardini di Castello for what concerns Art and Architecture, the Palazzo del Cinema and the Palazzo del Casino del Lido for the cinematographic art exhibition.
For some years, part of the Biennale's exhibitions have also been hosted at the Arsenale in Venice, thanks to the recovery of its famous Corderie, while dance, music and theater performances have been accepted at the Teatro delle Tese and the Teatro del Piccolo Arsenale.
